In 1929, the political situation in Europe is on a knife edge. The Soviet government is trying to build a bridge to the west by donating a monument to Finland with fine festivities.

However, a Soviet artist who came to hand over the monument is found murdered in the lobby of a Finnish hotel. Both the unveiling of the monument and relations between states are in jeopardy if the homicide is not solved quickly; At worst, conflict can drive states into a state of war. Fortunately, Belgian master detective Hercule Poirot has also travelled to distant Finland.
